OMNIA has a big (though not large) 3.2 in WQVGA LCD (active matrix) touch screen with a resolution of 240 × 400. The touch screen is highly sensitive and responsive and is great for intuitive tap, sweep, drag and drop operations as well as an on-screen QWERTY keyboard. OMNIA’s screen rotates from portrait to landscape mode when you turn the phone, as was first seen with iphone. It also features the Etiquette mode, which will put your phone in silence mode when the Omnia is placed display-side down.
Omnia has a great media player that provides MultiCodec support for playing DivX, Xvid and other video formats; eliminating the hassle of file format conversions. Samsung Omnia is way ahead of Apple’s iphone when it comes to camera. OMNIA has a 5 MegaPixel camera. It also has features like auto-focus, face detection, smile detection and auto-panorama. The phone has a built in GPS complete with navigation and geo-tagging capabilities.
Surpassing Apple iPhone 2 MP camera, Samsung OMNIA comes with a five-megapixel CMOS camera with features like auto-focus (AF), face detection, smile detection and auto-panorama shot. The phone also offers GPS, including navigation and geo-tagging capabilities.
As it is based on the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system, Samsung OMNIA is capable for handling MS Office documents such as PowerPoint, Excel and Word. Users can even access their emails via Outlook. One can even use an optical mouse similar to the ones used on laptop computers for improved usability and one-handed control.
It is the TouchWiz user interface that makes Omnia unique. An extra level of personalization has been added to the Stand-by Screen. Many applications such as the clock, music player, photo gallery, games, and notepad are located in a tray that is placed on the left side. These widgets can be easily dragged and dropped on the main screen from the tray; making the frequently used applications easily accessible. The major drawback is that you cannot add applications to the TouchWiz user interface. This is a major downfall as you are just limited to the widgets for photos, the media player, FM radio, calendar, profiles, games, several clocks, new notifications, and the notepad.
The bottom line is that is the Samsung Omnia is a great alternative for Apple iphone that features a nice touch screen and a highly customizable interface. I would give it 3 stars out of 5.
