iPod Touch - The latest portable gaming device?

To gain strength in the portable-game market, Apple had a big task ahead – To increase the processing speed of their iPod Touch. Apple reports that the applications processor inside the second generation iPod Touch that was unveiled in September runs much faster than the iPhone 3G. iPhone 3G houses the same processor that was used in iPhone and iPod Touch first generation. The iPod Touch second generation uses ARM-based processor that is running at 532MHz, while the iPhone 3G's processor runs at 412MHz.

This change in the processor speed might not look impressive on paper, but a huge difference can be noticed while rendering a 3D environment in a game. Apple has been promoting the second generation iPod touch as a gaming device rather than a music and video player.

According to ARM’s specifications, Apple can boost the clock speed of the processor up to 620MHz, but that will reduce the battery life. Apple has to strike a perfect balance between performance and battery life. Thus, the current change is only up to 532MHz.
